Traffic Safety Tips: Safety Should Always Be Along for the Ride

Headed out for vacation? Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a cross-country road trip, your safety starts before you even hit the gas.

Here’s a powerful reminder:
In the U.S., motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for people aged 1–54, but many of those tragedies can be prevented with simple, smart habits.

Always buckle up—every seat, every time
Drive sober—never mix alcohol, substances, and driving
Don’t drive distracted—that text can wait
Plan your route and rest stops ahead of time

Whether you're driving through Brookhaven or beyond, we want you and your loved ones to arrive safely—and return safely too. Let’s keep the memories happy and the roads safe.

If you see something, say something. Your call could make all the difference. For emergencies, always dial 911.

Crime Prevention

Protect Your Home While You’re Away

Taking time off should mean peace of mind, not worrying about what’s happening back home. Before you head out on vacation, take a few simple steps to safeguard your property and reduce the risk of burglary or unwanted activity.

Here are some smart ways to protect your home while you're away:

  • Place lights on timers to give the appearance that someone is home

  • Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your property and collect mail or packages

  • Avoid announcing your travel plans on social media until after you return

  • Double-check that all doors and windows are locked, including garage and side entrances

  • Make sure your security cameras are working and have enough storage to capture activity

  • If possible, park a car in the driveway or ask a neighbor to do so occasionally

For added peace of mind, Brookhaven residents can request a Residential Security Check from our department while they’re out of town. Officers will routinely check your home and alert you to any concerns.

Let us help keep your home safe so you can focus on relaxing and enjoying your time away.

Brookhaven Strong

Success isn’t just about reaching the top, it’s about who you bring with you along the way.

Every encouraging word, small gesture, or act of kindness has the power to change someone’s entire day or even their direction. Whether you’re leading a team, raising a family, or simply showing up in your community, remember this: your voice can be the reason someone keeps going.

When we lift each other up, we don’t just create stronger individuals—we build stronger neighborhoods, stronger departments, and a stronger Brookhaven.

Keep rising and bring someone with you.

Have a Question? We’ve Got Answers!
This section answers questions submitted by our community. Here’s one we received recently:

Q: I want to stay informed, how can I find out what kinds of crimes have occurred near my neighborhood?

A: Great question. The Brookhaven Police Department offers an interactive Crime Mapping Tool that allows residents to view recent crime activity throughout the city. The tool is easy to use and updated regularly to help you stay aware and informed.

You can search by address, date range, and crime type, giving you a clear picture of what’s happening in your area.

Knowledge is power and awareness is one of the best tools for prevention.
