Celebrating Safely This Fourth of July
Brookhaven, it’s time for cookouts, community, and fireworks! As we get ready to celebrate Independence Day this Friday, we want to remind everyone that fun and safety can go hand-in-hand.
Fireworks are a long-standing tradition, but with that tradition comes responsibility. Each year, Brookhaven PD responds to calls that could easily be avoided by following state laws, local ordinances, and a little neighborly courtesy.
Here’s what you need to know:
Fireworks can be used from 10:00 AM to 10:30 PM daily, and until 11:59 PM on July 3 and 4
Never discharge fireworks in parks, near gas stations, healthcare facilities, or public utilities
Do not use fireworks while under the influence
Firing a gun into the air is not a celebration—it’s illegal and dangerous
If you need to report fireworks after the legal hours, call 9-1-1. Before that time, use is allowed and does not require reporting.
We know many of you will celebrate with friends and family at home. If you do, please:
Keep fireworks away from kids and pets
Only light one device at a time, and always outside
Stay alert, sober, and respectful of those around you
Let’s make this Fourth one to remember for all the right reasons. Stay safe, be kind, and enjoy the weekend, Brookhaven.

Community Heroes: Our Business Partners—Backing the Badge, Building the Community
This week, we’re honoring a group whose impact often goes unseen but never goes unnoticed—our Brookhaven business community.
From hosting events to supporting outreach programs, our local business owners have proven time and time again that public safety is a shared responsibility. Through their generosity, we’re able to host meaningful initiatives like Shop with a Badge, fund wellness programs for officers, and build real connections with our residents.
And now, we’re asking for your continued partnership.

The Hot Pursuit Glow Run is just around the corner on August 23, and we’re currently seeking sponsors to help light up the night—and support a cause that truly matters. All proceeds from the race go directly toward our community programs, especially Shop with a Badge, which brings joy to dozens of children each holiday season.
If you’re a local business owner or know one we’d love to have you join our sponsorship team.
Help us strengthen our impact.
Help us serve better.
Help us glow.
To inquire about sponsorship opportunities, contact Sgt. Moore at [email protected] or reach her at 404-834-6428.
Together, we don’t just work in Brookhaven, we make it safer, stronger, and better.

Traffic Safety Tips: Fireworks Aren’t the Only Thing to Watch This Weekend
The Fourth of July is one of the most traveled and unfortunately, most dangerous holidays on the road. Whether you're heading to a cookout, a fireworks show, or just running errands, Brookhaven PD is reminding everyone to drive like lives depend on it, because they do.
Here are a few traffic safety tips to help you stay safe this holiday:
Plan Ahead: Know your route, check traffic, and expect delays near parks, fireworks zones, and large gatherings.
Watch for Pedestrians: More people will be walking to events and crossing streets at night, especially near parks and neighborhoods.
Don’t Drive Impaired: If you plan to drink, make a plan to get home safely. Call a ride, designate a sober driver, or stay put.
Be Patient Near Fireworks Sites: Slow down in residential areas. Watch for families, kids, and distracted pedestrians.
Stay Alert Late-Night: Accidents spike after 10 PM on July 4—stay sharp and ditch the distractions.
Let’s make sure the only thing lighting up the sky is the fireworks not emergency lights. Brookhaven is counting on all of us to drive responsibly.

If you see something, say something. Your call could make all the difference. For emergencies, always dial 911.

Crime Prevention
If You See Something, Say Something
With large crowds, backyard celebrations, and plenty of summer activity, the Fourth of July is a time when situational awareness matters more than ever.
Whether it’s suspicious behavior, unsafe use of fireworks, or anything that feels out of place don’t second guess yourself. Trust your instincts and report it.
Brookhaven Police rely on vigilant community members to help keep our neighborhoods safe. You are the extra eyes and ears that help us respond faster and smarter.
Here’s how to take action:
Call 911 immediately if you see suspicious or criminal activity in progress
Do not confront individuals your safety is priority number one
Provide as much detail as possible (location, appearance, vehicle info, etc.)
If it’s not urgent but still a concern call 911 its our non-emergency number too
Safety is a shared responsibility and speaking up could prevent something serious from happening.
This holiday, let’s celebrate with courage, kindness, and community awareness.
Brookhaven Strong
Keep Going—Especially When It’s Hard
Not every week is easy. Not every day feels like a win. But the fact that you keep showing up, doing your best, and pushing forward that matters more than you know.
Challenges don’t always come with warning signs. They show up as setbacks, hard conversations, quiet doubts, or heavy responsibilities. But so do strength, growth, and grit.
This week, remember: progress doesn’t always look loud. Sometimes, it's just the quiet decision to keep going.
Whatever you're facing, take a deep breath, square your shoulders, and step forward, you’ve already made it further than you think.

Have a Question? We’ve Got Answers!
This section answers questions submitted by our community. Here’s one we received recently:
Q: The last newsletter mentioned that Briarwood would have a lower speed limit, but I couldn’t find that update on the linked article. I live across from Briarwood Park, when is the speed limit actually changing?
A: Great question and thank you for catching that! To clarify, Briarwood Road’s speed limit was reduced in the past and is not scheduled to be lowered further at this time. Our mention of Briarwood in the last issue may have caused some confusion, and we appreciate the opportunity to correct it.
The actual streets that are scheduled to have reduced speed limits in the coming weeks are:
Ashford Dunwoody Road and Johnson Ferry Road: from 40 MPH to 35 MPH
Harts Mill Road: from 35 MPH to 30 MPH
For the full list and additional details, you can view the official city announcement here:
