Community Heroes: Peachtree Creek Greenway – Where Brookhaven Comes to Life

This week, we’re spotlighting a true gem in our city—the Peachtree Creek Greenway.

More than just a trail, this vibrant linear park is where our community walks, rides, runs, connects, and finds a breath of fresh air in the heart of the city. With over a mile of paved trail in Brookhaven—and more on the way—it’s the perfect place to exercise, unwind, and catch up with friends or family.

Whether you’re biking at sunrise, taking a lunch break stroll, or introducing your kids to nature, the Greenway is your space to thrive. And every step you take there contributes to a healthier, more connected Brookhaven.

Traffic Safety Tips: Pets + Driving = Distractions You Might Not Expect

We love our furry companions, but when it comes to driving, it’s time to talk safety.

In Georgia, there's no specific law that says your dog can’t roam around your vehicle or sit in your lap. But here’s the thing, it’s still a major distraction, and distracted driving is dangerous. An unrestrained pet can quickly turn a peaceful drive into a serious accident.

Here’s how pets can distract drivers:

  • Climbing onto your lap or around the car

  • Getting underfoot near the pedals

  • Barking or making noises that cause you to turn around

  • Needing constant attention or calming from the driver

And here are some tips to keep everyone safe:

  • Use a proper pet restraint system

  • Never let your pet sit in your lap

  • Avoid letting them stick their head out the window

  • Limit food and water before long rides

  • Always unhook leashes inside the vehicle

  • Never place pets unrestrained in an open truck bed

  • Stop regularly to give your pet (and yourself) a break

Our pets depend on us to keep them safe and that starts with safe driving. Let’s make smart choices that protect both our passengers and our four-legged friends

If you see something, say something. Your call could make all the difference. For emergencies, always dial 911.

Crime Prevention

Are Your Security Cameras Helping or Just Hanging?

Security cameras are one of the most effective tools for deterring crime and assisting investigations—but only when they’re used wisely.

If you’ve installed a doorbell camera or home surveillance system, here’s how to make sure it’s truly doing its job:

Check Your Angles.
Make sure your cameras clearly capture faces, vehicles, and entry points (not just the top of someone’s head or the sidewalk). A camera that doesn’t catch usable footage can’t help us solve a crime.

Add Lighting.
A camera without proper lighting is almost useless at night. Motion-activated lights can improve your footage and scare off potential intruders.

Use Alerts and Storage.
Enable motion alerts and make sure your footage is saved either to the cloud or a hard drive. Many systems overwrite video after a few days—don’t lose critical evidence because of expired storage.

Register With BPD.
Did you know you can voluntarily register your camera with the Brookhaven Police Department? We don’t monitor your footage, but knowing where cameras are can help officers quickly gather evidence after a crime occurs in your area. Sign up today for Operation Plugged In.

Don’t Forget Cybersecurity.
Keep your cameras’ software updated and use strong, unique passwords to protect against hackers accessing your system.

Security cameras aren’t just a tech trend, they’re a smart investment in your home’s safety and the safety of your neighborhood. Let’s work together to create a stronger, more secure Brookhaven, one camera at a time
