In this week's issue:
Together we are Better
As the heart of Brookhaven continues to grow and evolve, so do the ways we serve and connect with you. This week, we're taking a pause to highlight the power of engagement because safety isn’t just about response, it’s about relationship.
In recent weeks, we've seen moments of celebration and concern. From powerful community events that brought neighbors together, to critical incidents that reminded us all how important it is to stay aware, connected, and prepared.
This issue is about bridging both realities celebrating what’s working while empowering you with the tools, awareness, and opportunities to stay safe and informed. Whether you're a parent navigating digital safety, a neighbor looking to get more involved, or a business owner wanting to help foster trust you have a place in this work.
We’re committed to showing up, listening, educating, and working side-by-side with you to create a Brookhaven that is not only protected but connected.
Let’s build forward together.
Community Engagement: Why it isn’t Optional
In policing, one of the most powerful tools isn’t equipment, it’s presence.
Community engagement isn’t a checkbox. It’s a commitment. A commitment to show up, to listen, to educate, and to build trust where mistrust has lived for far too long. It’s what allows law enforcement to shift from being seen as responders to being recognized as partners.
When officers take the time to connect not just during crisis, but consistently, they open the door for real dialogue, stronger relationships, and safer neighborhoods. The badge becomes more than a symbol of authority; it becomes a bridge between people, rooted in respect.
It’s easy to talk about building community. What’s harder and more impactful is doing it daily. Through youth programs, neighborhood events, conversations with business owners, or simply patrolling neighborhoods with intention, community engagement becomes a living, breathing part of public safety.
At Brookhaven Police Department, we believe prevention begins with connection. Because when people feel seen, heard, and respected they show up too. And that’s where the real change happens.
If your neighborhood, community group, or business would like to connect, collaborate, or invite an officer to speak or attend an upcoming event, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always looking for new ways to engage and build with our community. Contact Sergeant Moore to start the conversation at [email protected].

Community Heroes: Officer North - A Life Saved in Seconds
On August 25, 2025, a routine patrol turned into a heroic moment.
Officer W. North was on duty when he overheard a Live911 call about a child who was choking nearby. Without hesitation, he responded to the scene and arrived within moments. Using a LifeVac device, Officer North was able to dislodge the blockage and restore the child’s breathing. His swift, decisive action prevented a tragedy and gave one family the gift of another day.
This moment is a powerful reminder that our officers are not only guardians of the law but also guardians of our community.
We are deeply proud of Officer North’s professionalism, readiness, and calm under pressure. His actions reflect the very best of what it means to serve and the importance of equipping our officers with lifesaving tools and training.
🎥 Watch the powerful moment unfold below.
Thank you, Officer North. Your quick thinking and steady hand saved a life and showed us all what true service looks like.
Student Corner: The Company You Keep Matters
Whether you’re in middle school, high school, or college who you surround yourself with shapes the direction of your life.
Community engagement isn’t just about showing up to events it’s about being intentional with your energy, your choices, and your friendships. The people you hang out with either build you up or pull you back.
Ask yourself:
Do my friends support my goals, or distract me from them?
Do they encourage good decisions, or pressure me into risky ones?
Are they building community or just tearing others down?
Strong friendships are built on trust, respect, and shared values. When you choose to be around people who lead with integrity, you build your own character too. That’s the kind of community engagement that starts with you and it spreads.
Choose wisely. Show up for others. Be the kind of friend that makes your circle stronger.

Traffic Safety Tips: When Speed Becomes a Threat: How to Stay Safe Around Aggressive Drivers
Speeding isn’t just dangerous for the person behind the wheel, it puts everyone at risk, including you, your passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
If you encounter a speeding or aggressive driver, here are a few smart steps you can take to stay safe:
Move Over: If you're in the left lane and someone is approaching quickly, move to the right when safe and let them pass.
Create Distance: Give speeding drivers extra space. They’re more likely to lose control in a sudden stop or emergency.
Don’t Engage: If a driver is tailgating or acting aggressively, resist the urge to react. Slow down and let them go around you.
Stay Aware: Speeding often goes hand-in-hand with road rage. Stay alert, and don’t let someone else’s poor behavior affect your own.
Call for Help: If you feel unsafe, especially if someone is following or harassing you, call 911 immediately. Your safety matters.
Remember: staying calm and smart can make the difference between a close call and a dangerous outcome. Let’s all do our part to make the roads safer.

If you see something, say something. Your call could make all the difference. For emergencies, always dial 911.

Crime Prevention and Community Watch: See Something? Say Something… But Say It to 911
In a time where neighborhood apps and online groups are full of activity, it’s easy to report suspicious behavior to Ring, Nextdoor, or your favorite community platform. But when it comes to crime prevention, those apps are not where your report should start.
Don't post it. Report it.
If you witness something suspicious, concerning, or potentially criminal, the first and most important step is to call 911.
Why 911?
At the Brookhaven Police Department, 911 is both our emergency and non-emergency number. Every call, big or small, matters to us. Your report could be the missing piece that helps solve a crime or prevent one.
Here’s the bottom line: Social media alerts your neighbors. 911 alerts your police.
Let’s work together to keep our community informed, connected and most importantly, safe.
Brookhaven Strong
Unity. Resilience. Action.
In the face of both challenges and celebrations, the Brookhaven community continues to rise.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a powerful display of what it means to be Brookhaven Strong from neighbors showing up for one another, to officers going above and beyond in service, and local businesses stepping up to support our youth programs and safety initiatives.
Whether it’s standing against violence, investing in youth, or building deeper trust between police and residents, our strength is in our connection. Community engagement isn’t a moment, it’s a movement. And it’s alive here in Brookhaven.
Let’s keep showing up. Let’s keep building.
Let’s keep proving that together, we are Brookhaven Strong.

Have a Question? We’ve Got Answers!
This section answers questions submitted by our community. Here’s one we received recently:
Q: Why is it so important to call 911, even for things that don’t feel like an emergency?
A: In Brookhaven, 911 is both our emergency and non-emergency line. When you call, it gets logged into our official system, not just into a social media thread. Every call you make gives us a clearer picture of what’s happening in your area and allows us to respond with data, resources, and urgency. Apps like Ring, Nextdoor, or group chats are great for awareness, but they’re not action channels. Your call helps us help you, so don’t hesitate to pick up the phone.
Let’s build trust, one question at a time.
