National Night Out - Let’s Come Together as One Community

Dear Brookhaven Community,

We are thrilled to invite you to our National Night Out event, happening tomorrow, August 5th, from 6 to 9 PM at Briarwood Recreation Center, located at 2235 Briarwood Way. This special evening is all about coming together as a community, building connections, and fostering a positive relationship with our police department and our amazing community partners.

Rain or shine, we will be there to give back to our young people as they gear up for the new school year. We're offering free haircuts, free hairstyles, valuable resources, and delicious food while it lasts. Most importantly, it's an opportunity to connect, have fun, and strengthen the bonds that make our community so special.

We can’t wait to see you there!

Community Heroes: Celebrating Our Mental Health Clinician

This week, we are proud to shine a spotlight on our incredible Mental Health Clinician, who plays a vital role both within our department and in our broader community. She has an extraordinary ability to connect with individuals in need, offering not just resources, but genuine care and follow-up support that truly makes a difference.

In this edition, we invite you to get a closer look at the impactful work she does by listening to her recent interview. In this conversation, she discusses how we’re leveraging innovative technology tools to assist our Mental Health Clinician.

Her dedication and compassion are truly inspiring, and we are so grateful to have her as part of our team and community.

Stay tuned, and be sure to check out her interview for more insights into the incredible work being done to support mental health in Brookhaven!

Community Heroes: A New Generation of Leaders

We also want to give a huge round of applause to the graduates of our first-ever Teen Police Academy! These incredible students committed to a full week of learning, teamwork, self-evaluation, and connection with our department.

Throughout the program, students learned about law enforcement procedures, decision-making, Georgia law, and what it means to lead with integrity. The best part? Parents and students are already asking when they can come back!

This success is a direct reflection of the officers who poured into our young people; thank you for your time, energy, and dedication to education. And thank you to the parents who signed your students up and showed up for them every step of the way.

As we move forward, we’re excited to relaunch our Cadet Program, which will provide a deeper, more centralized pathway for students interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. Traffic Safety Tips: Back to School Awareness

As our students head back to school, it’s more important than ever to prioritize their safety on the roadways. We all play a crucial role in ensuring that our young people travel to and from school safely, so let’s commit to being extra vigilant during this busy season.

Here are a few important reminders for all drivers:

  1. Slow Down in School Zones: Always adhere to posted speed limits in school zones. These limits are in place to protect children who may be crossing the street or walking near the roadway.

  2. Stay Attentive: Put your phone away and eliminate distractions while driving. Your full attention is needed to watch for children who may be crossing the street or walking along sidewalks.

  3. Obey School Bus Signals: When a school bus stops and extends its stop sign, be sure to abide by the rules. This ensures that children can safely enter and exit the bus.

  4. Watch for Pedestrians: Be mindful of crosswalks and intersections, and always yield to pedestrians. Make eye contact with those who are crossing to ensure they see you and know it’s safe to proceed.

By working together and staying attentive, we can create a safer environment for our students and ensure they get to school and back home safely. Let’s all do our part to protect our young people on the road!

If you see something, say something. Your call could make all the difference. For emergencies, always dial 911.

Crime Prevention: Staying Safe Online and Combating Cyberbullying

In today’s digital age, cyber safety is more important than ever, not just for young people, but for everyone. As we navigate the online world, it's essential to stay vigilant and protect ourselves and our loved ones from potential online threats, including cyberbullying. Here are some key tips to help you and your family stay safe online:

  1. Protect Personal Information: Never share sensitive information, such as addresses, phone numbers, or passwords, on public platforms. Make sure your social media profiles are set to private so only trusted friends and family can see your information.

  2. Recognize and Respond to Cyberbullying: If you or someone you know is experiencing cyberbullying, it's important to speak up. Save the evidence, block the bully, and report the behavior to the platform or a trusted adult. Remember, no one deserves to be treated poorly online.

  3. Educate and Communicate: Have open conversations with your children and family members about online safety. Teach them how to recognize suspicious messages or behavior and encourage them to come to you if they ever feel uncomfortable or threatened online.

  4. Use Strong Passwords: Ensure that all accounts are protected with strong, unique passwords. Consider using two-factor authentication for an added layer of security.

By staying informed and proactive, we can create a safer online environment for everyone. Let’s work together to protect our community both offline and online!
